What the DOT code on a tyre means and why it matters

On every tyre's sidewall, usually in an oval recess, sits the DOT marking. Most drivers never look at it — yet it answers the most common question: "how old is this tyre?"

How to read it

The last four digits are the key: first two are the production week, last two the year. 3226 means week 32 of 2026; 0525 means week 5 of 2025.

When a tyre is too old

Manufacturers speak of six years as the inspection limit and ten as absolute — regardless of tread. A tyre ages even when not driven: the compound oxidises, sidewalls crack.

Why it matters at sale

A customer buying a "new" tyre deserves to know its production year. A three-year shelf-aged tyre is not defective, but it is not "new" as the customer imagines. Say it upfront — no surprises, no forum reviews.
