What an AI receptionist can and cannot do in a tire shop

The fastest way to be disappointed by an AI receptionist is to expect a technician. It is not one. It is a receptionist that never misses a ring and never forgets to write the number down.

What it can do

• Answer on the first ring, during business hours and after them.
• Quote a tire price for a given size — from the list you loaded, not from the internet.
• Book a fitting time into the slots you allow.
• Take the vehicle, the size, the name, and the best number to call back.
• Give hours, address, and directions.
• Hand the call to a person when asked, or when the question is outside its list.
• Keep a record of every call, including the ones it could not answer.

What it cannot do

• Inspect anything. It cannot see tread depth, a bulge, or a bent rim.
• Diagnose. “It pulls to the right after you fitted them” is a technician's call, not a receptionist's.
• Invent a price. If a size is not on your list, the only honest answer is that someone will call back with it.
• Order parts, promise a delivery time, or decide a warranty claim.
• Calm down a furious customer. That call needs a human, quickly.
• Negotiate. It quotes what you told it to quote.

What keeps it honest

Three things, and they are all in your hands:

• One source of prices. Your list is the only place it may quote from. Update it, and the agent is up to date on the next call.
• A defined fallback. When it does not know, it says so and takes a number. A gap in the list is a callback, never a guess.
• A log you can read. Every call is written down. The gaps in the list tell you what to add next week.

The right way to judge it

Listen to ten recordings. Count how many callers got a real answer, how many booked, and how many were handed to a person. That is the entire test. If it quotes prices you did not set, or promises work you cannot do, turn it off — the problem is the setup, not the idea.
