Tire shop phone answering service: what it should actually do
“Phone answering service” means three different things in this industry, and they are not close to each other. What separates them is one question: what happens when a caller asks for a price?
Option 1: voicemail
Cheap, and it is not an answering service. The caller hears a greeting, hangs up, and calls the next shop. If your voicemail box is full, they do not even get that.
Option 2: a human answering service
A person in a call center picks up, takes a name and number, and promises a callback. That is better than voicemail. The limit is that they do not know your stock, your price list, or your calendar — unless you keep all three updated with them, which most shops stop doing in month two.
Good for: urgent messages, after-hours overflow, a shop with a fixed, simple price sheet.
Option 3: an AI receptionist
It answers on the first ring, 24/7, and it can quote a tire price and book a time — but only from the list and the calendar you give it. It does not improvise. When a question falls outside its list it should say so and hand the caller to a person, not invent an answer.
Good for: shops with a real price list, high call volume at the counter, and someone who will spend an hour setting it up properly.
Eight questions to ask any provider — including us
- Can it quote a price for a specific size from my list, or only take a message?
- Can it book into my calendar, or does it just promise a callback?
- What exactly does it say when it does not know the answer?
- Can I read the transcript of every call?
- Does it tell the caller the call is recorded, where the state requires it?
- Does it speak Spanish?
- What does it cost after hours, and what happens on a holiday?
- Can I turn it off in one click when I want the phone to myself?
The honest part
No answering service — human or software — replaces a service writer who knows the customer's truck. The job is to stop losing the call before it reaches that person. If a provider promises more than that, ask them to show you a recording.
