How to prepare a car for the technical inspection
Around a third of inspection failures are trivial: a bulb, a wiper blade, low tread, an expired fire extinguisher. Ten minutes of checks save a second trip.
Before you go
- Lights — every bulb, including plate lights.
- Tyres — tread above the legal minimum, no cracks or bulges.
- Wipers and washers — blades that streak fail the inspection.
- Fluids — leaks get noticed; so does an empty washer tank.
- Documents and kit — registration, first-aid kit, extinguisher, warning triangle.
What the inspector measures
Brakes on a roller — imbalance between sides fails. Emissions on older diesels — a hard drive before the test helps. Steering play — a worn ball joint is the classic fail.
If it fails
You get a deadline to fix and return — usually free re-inspection within it. Fix the listed items, keep the receipt, go back.
