When to fit winter tires and how long they last

Every year the same picture: first cold day, phones never stop, slots get booked a week out. The customer who could have come in October arrives in November — at the busiest time.

When is the right time

A winter tire is not made for snow — it is made for cold. Its compound stays softer at low temperatures, so it brakes better than a summer tire already below seven degrees.

Practical rule: change when morning temperatures drop below that line, not when the law forces you.

How long they last

Four to six seasons depending on mileage, driving and storage. But years are not the measure — tread depth is: 4 mm is the winter minimum; below it the tire stops clearing water and snow.

What to check at fitting

Change both tires on an axle together, replace rubber valves, always balance, and check pressure cold per the vehicle spec — not the tire's sidewall.
