Summer or all-season tires — which pays off

An all-season tire is a compromise — a good one, if used in the conditions it was made for. Trouble starts when it is asked to be both a summer and a winter tire without residue.

What all-season does well

Where it hits the wall

Real winter: on snow and ice a winter tire brakes measurably shorter. High mileage: a seasonal set costs less per kilometre. Precision driving: all-season gives up at both ends.

How to recommend honestly

Low-mileage city car? All-season is practical. Everything else — two sets, fewer compromises.
